Abstract

A study was carried out in the Forest Research Institute Campus, Dehra Dun to estimate the carbon content of some of the important tree species to have an idea about the responses of these species to the changing climate. The conclusive outputs of this paper are, (i) Pinus roxburghii is storing maximum amount of carbon followed by Pterospermum acerifoIium, Syzygium cumini etc.; (ii) the carbon storing efficiency of some species like P. roxburghii, Shorea robusta etc. is decreasing with increasing concentration of CO₂, This may be due to the fact that biota is currently releasing additional carbon to the atmosphere rather than storing carbon. This new hypothesis, against our general hypothesis that with increasing atmospheric carbon the efficiency of storing carbon will also increase, is a preliminary study and needs much more studies and experiments.

Abstract

Changes in an ecosystem are inevitable. Recording of these changes can prove to be fruitful for the management of forests, particularly the moist Sal forest. Present study was carried out in Sal Forests of Lachchhiwala, a famous pcinic spot, to assess the changes in dominanace and diversity of plant species since 1987. After critically analyzing the results it was found that Sal is still the most dominant tree species. In shrub and herb layers the species richness has increased significantly and so is the species diversity. It was also found that homogeneous Sal forests, managed as monocultures, are slowly but steady becoming heterogeneous.

Abstract

A rare mineral Beudantite PbFe₃ (AsO₄)(SO₄)(OH)₆had been identified by X-ray diffraction technique in a weathered mineralised quartz vein, emplaced in phyllitic sequence. Its cell parameters are a=7.32Å. and c=17.13Å that are comparable to those of JCPDS-ASTM standard. Its association with corkite suggests that the area may have potential for silver and gold.

Abstract

The north eastern region (NER) of India receives bountiful rains (>2000 mm) annually. However, there is extreme water scarcity during post- and premonsoon season (November-March). In such a situation, roof water harvesting (RWH) holds promise for multiple livelihood opportunities. RWH unit with polyfilm lined water collection tank of 37 m³ storage capacity (i.e. 5.5 x 4.5 x 1.5 m³) was demonstrated at 11 farmers fields mostly on hill tops in the Ri-Bhoi district (Meghalaya). The average demonstration area was 500 m²/farmer in the vicinity of homesteads (kitchen gardens). Volume of water harvested in a collection tank was about 53 m³ including about 16 m³ harvested during dry season due to seasonal replenishment. The cost of water harvesting was estimated at about Rs 144 and Rs 119/m³ considering lifespan of five and ten years respectively. Farmers used harvested water for diversified activities such as raising crops [maize, broccoli, French bean, laipatta (Brassica juncea), tomato, etc.] and livestock (pig or poultry) in addition to domestic use. The farmers without RWH could use land only during rainy season for crop cultivation. On an average, the net income from each RWH based model (500 m² demonstration area) was Rs 14,910 for crop + piggery and Rs 11,410 for crop + poultry farming which was 261 and 176% higher, respectively than the normal farmers' practice. Similarly, employment and water use efficiency enhanced by 221 and 586%; and 168 and 218% under crop + piggery and crop + poultry based farming respectively.

Abstract

This paper examined the cost and return of guava orchard revealed that the establishment cost of guava orchard at first year is higher as compared to second year and third year of the gestation period. Inter cropping of wheat play an important role to provide income in gestation period for curtailing the establishment cost. Highest input cost involved in more than 12 years aged orchard with low productivity and income while 6-12 year aged guava orchard provide better production as well as income and employment to the growers. Kanpur Nagar is potential area of guava producing a large quantum of fruits having good quality competing to allahabadi guava. In lean season the whole sale price of guava reach upto Rs.1000-1200 per qtl., which decline the level of income of guava producer. It is due to lack of assured/efficient and innovative marketing arrangements and facilities for better storage and transport for remunerative prices and value addition to mitigate the production and marketing risk. It is suggested to make a guava growers co-operatives under support of government agencies to seek better remunerative prices through efficient market as well as facilities of cooling chains and processing units during postharvest may provide a big incentive to guava growers for better productivity, income and employment in the study area.

Abstract

North East India is a biodiversity-rich zone and a part of both the Himalaya and Indo-Burma biodiversity hot-spots. It is a large-scale multipurpose landscape consisting of a mosaic of crops, livestock and forest. The landscape also ensures almost all the ecosystem services that con-tribute to the well-being of more than 100 diverse ethnic groups (indigenous people) in the region. However, in recent years, rapid transition in the form of promotion and expansion of oil palm and rubber plantations as mooted and supported by the state has posed threats to the ecosystem and biodiversity especially the biocultural landscapes. Supported by empirical evidence (primary and secondary data), this study argues that as we increase the intensity of production or harvest of such crops, the environmental cost becomes unprecedented and immense to be offset by economic gain. The use of renewable bio-logical resources as the foundation for a bioeconomy must be regulated in terms of environmental impact ra-ther than short-term financial dividends. Therefore, we need to develop optimization models for the biocultural landscape(s) that determine land use based on what is both economically and environmentally optimal.

Abstract

Addressing the emerging challenges of agriculture demands reorienting the agricultural education in general and agronomy education in particular. Crop husbandry has been evolving constantly, although academically and, for different operational purposes, agronomy science and academia have remained far more static than they should have been. This note emphasizes that the science of agronomy must include all the important aspects of crop management so that agronomists/students can attain better comprehension in wider perspective so that the goal of agronomy can be realized in the current context of changing crop husbandry.
